The office manager at our doctor’s office today told us that we were no longer welcome as patients and that he had the authority to "discharge" us after we’d been seeing this physician for over 3 years.
He was quite rude about it in fact. I’m willing to bet that the physician doesn’t know that he has told us this. But the doc WILL find out, believe me.

We’ve had many problems with this office manager before and with the other person in the office as well. We’ll call asking for an appointment and never hear back from them; we’ve gotten into the habit of stopping in at the office to ask for appointments since they are very bad at returning calls. They also don’t call with lab results or follow up. In fact, the doctor even told us to stop in if we couldn’t get through or didn’t hear from the staff. He told us that directly.

The "last straw" was reached today. After waiting for 5 days for someone from the office to call us back to make an appointment we finally went over and the "you-know-what" hit the fan in front of other patients who were nodding in agreement with what we were saying.

This office manager kept wanting to know what we wanted to talk to the doctor about "or else I can’t make an appointment for you". I thought that was ‘privileged information’ between the physician and his patient; aren’t the details of a consultation private? The fact that it was about our health should be the only concern of this office manager, right? I mean, its not like we were stopping by to just talk about sports or something…

The doctor is very good but he is hamstring by his office staff. We’ve talked to him a number of times about the problems we’ve encountered and he always says, "Yes, I know– it’s awful, isn’t it?" He maintains that every time he fires someone they take him to court!

We have already located another physician locally, one who seems to have a more professional staff and we’ll be seeing him as soon as the records are transferred over to him. By the way, can WE take the records over or must they be sent by our former doctor’s office to the new one? Can they be released to US?

So do we have any recourse as far as this office manager goes? Should we write or e-mail the doc and let him know what happened today and why we won’t be seeing him again? We really do like him and have received pretty good care from him in the past.

I guess I just want to get even. I know of other people who have left because of this very same problem. It is a real shame.

Anyway, your advice would be helpful as well as some insight.

Sorry to vent!

Thank YOU!
Forgot to mention that the doc and the office manager are very, VERY good friends.

And I did have a concern about a medication I was on that I wanted to talk with the doc about. I had told the office manager that during my initial call.
